San Ignacio. Upgrading and expansion of a villa in Mexico

San Ignacio is a renovation and expansion project of a dwelling located in the state of Nayarit in Mexico. The client's request was to renovate the existing building in poor condition and the construction of two new volumes, one that could serve as a flexible space for photo shoots and other creative expressions, and the second as an outdoor living space in direct relationship with the pool

Mexican architecture firm PALMA's proposal for the redevelopment of San Ignacio consists of two main actions: the modification of the existing house and the configuration of the central courtyard with the construction of the two new volumes

The existing volume is extended to the edge of the lot, redistributing the bedrooms with bathrooms and with the addition of a private patio for the master bedroom bathroom, as well as a small TV room and laundry room at the ends of the block. The sheet metal roof is removed and replaced with a concrete slab that provides greater height to the rooms and the ability to include a series of skylights that allow more natural lighting

The second action of the redevelopment is to reconfigure the central open space, placing the pool in the center of the lot with the existing volume to the north and the two new volumes on the sides. To create some privacy between the pool area and the rooms, a series of short walls are built that also define a porch with a bamboo roof that provides some shade

The newly constructed volumes, one enclosed and the other open, serve as flexible spaces for different activities and maintain a constant relationship with the circular pool placed in the middle. Finally, a landscape design was created that intertwined the existing house and the new additions, mainly through the use of a sidewalk with buried bricks that seems to disappear as one walks from the house to the garden
