Energy autonomy and living comfort for the wood and steel BE House

The BE House was designed for an entrepreneurial family of four people. The project site is a 370sqm plot, with an optimal orientation, surrounded by small houses in the town of Argentona, a 30-minute drive from Barcelona

SUMO Arquitectes designs the BE House are inspired by passive house principles. The resulting architecture is compact, well sealed; the facade is optimally insulated to avoid dispersion. The concrete foundation on which the building stands provides the right thermal inertia. With these design features, a low-consumption building is guaranteed for both heating and cooling

The ground and second floors of the BE House are built with an industrialized drywall system. The structure is made of wooden slabs and beams, and the façade is finished with heat-treated pine lath. Hot-dip galvanized steel profiles define the porch area: a lightweight structure that generates a transitional space between the interior and exterior. Laminated wood sunshades protect the house from direct sunlight and allow cross ventilation

Each material is used where it is most efficient. A vegetated roof protects the building from exposure to direct sunlight and prevents overheating. A photovoltaic system placed on the roof produces the energy that the house needs, and storage batteries allow the BE House to be disconnected from the power grid
